Staff Training and Competency Audits for Care Providers

Why Training Audits Matter

CQC consistently links care quality to staff training and competency. Under both the Safe and Effective key questions, inspectors assess whether staff have the skills, knowledge, and support they need to deliver good care.

Mandatory Training Requirements

While there is no single definitive list of mandatory training, CQC expects care providers to ensure staff complete training in: safeguarding (adults and children), fire safety, first aid, manual handling, infection prevention and control, food hygiene, health and safety, equality and diversity, and mental capacity and consent.

Auditing Training Compliance

  • Maintain a training matrix showing all staff, courses, completion dates, and renewal dates
  • Set up alerts for training due to expire
  • Track attendance at both face-to-face and online sessions
  • Verify that training providers are reputable and content is current
  • Assess whether training translates into practice

Supervision and Appraisal

Regular supervision (at least every 6-8 weeks) and annual appraisals demonstrate that you support and develop your workforce. Audit that sessions are structured, documented, and include discussion of training needs, wellbeing, and performance.

Competency Assessments

Beyond certificates, assess whether staff can apply their training in practice. Medication competency assessments, observed practice, and scenario-based assessments provide stronger evidence than training records alone.
