Ofsted SCCIF Explained: A Guide for Children's Home Managers

What Is the SCCIF?

The Social Care Common Inspection Framework (SCCIF) is Ofsted's framework for inspecting children's social care services, including children's homes. Understanding this framework is essential for any registered manager or responsible individual.

How SCCIF Inspections Work

Ofsted inspects children's homes at least twice a year — one full inspection and one interim inspection. Full inspections result in overall effectiveness judgements. Interim inspections assess progress since the last full inspection.

The Judgement Areas

  • Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: How well children are cared for and whether they make progress
  • How well children and young people are helped and protected: Safeguarding effectiveness and risk management
  • The effectiveness of leaders and managers: Quality of leadership, management oversight, and workforce development

Quality Standards

The Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015 set out nine quality standards that every children's home must meet. These cover the quality of care, protection of children, leadership and management, and children's wishes and feelings.

How to Prepare

MyCareAudit's Ofsted Children's Home Master Audit Tool covers all 53 sections including all nine quality standards, 30 audit areas, and the complete SCCIF framework. Regular self-assessment against these standards ensures you're always inspection-ready.
