Frequently asked questions

Which care services do not need CQC registration?

In England, CQC registration is needed for regulated activities such as personal care. Services that offer company, activities, meals, practical help or housing-related support, with no personal care, usually do not need to register. Check the CQC scope guidance for your own service.

Do non-registered services still need policies?

Yes. Councils, commissioners, funders, insurers and charity regulators expect clear safeguarding, health and safety, data protection, complaints and staffing arrangements, even when CQC does not inspect you.

What if we start helping with personal care?

Then that part of your service needs CQC registration. The pack includes a Personal Care Boundary policy so staff know where the line is and what to do.

Are the documents written for CQC services?

No. The specialist documents are written for non-registered services and use the job titles Service Manager and Nominated Lead. Shared documents are adjusted for your service when you download them.
